It is a medical condition in which poor blood flow to the brain results in cell death.

There are two main types of stroke:  ischemic, due to lack of blood flow, and haemorrhagic, due to bleeding. They result in part of the brain not functioning properly.

Diagnosis of stroke is clinical which is confirmed by CT/MRI brain.

If patient presents within 4.5 hours, thrombolysis can be done with injectable medications like alteplase or tenectaplase.

In cases of large vessel occlusion, mechanical thrombectomy can also be done in appropriate circumstances.

Few patients require surgical intervention e.g. decompressive craniotomy for survival instroke patients.

Anticoagulation is needed for secondary stroke prevention in embolic strokes.

Most of the ischemic stroke patients are managed with dual antiplatelets and statins with supportive medications.
